THREE WEEKS UNTIL DENTAL IS DITCHED
CHRIS BOWEN MP
On June 30 the Morrison Government is set to take away dental services from 580,000 Australians with the expiration of the National Partnership Agreement on Public Dental Services.
Greg Hunt and Scott Morrison must sign a new NPA with the states as a matter of urgency and guarantee full funding for another three and a half years.
There should be no cuts to funding or eligibility, and no partial extensions. Australians deserve a proper and fair guarantee on these services.
In early March Senator Richard Colbeck confirmed the Government was considering the NPA on dental as part of the Budget process.
Well it’s three weeks until the Agreement expires, and we are yet to see a signed deal from the Government.
Two million Australians skip dental care due to cost each year, causing over 70,000 potentially preventable hospitalisations. If the Agreement expires, things will only get worse.
The Liberals have consistently shown their disregard for Australians’ oral health, cutting the NPA on Public Dental Services by nearly $300 million per year.
During COVID-19 many dental services were suspended, meaning Australians are further behind the eight ball when it comes to their oral health.
Australians want and deserve a health system that is fair and accessible for all. This has been made abundantly clear in the past few months.
The Government must give Australians a guarantee for their dental health now.
It’s time to sign the NPA Minister Hunt.
