WOMEN FALLING FURTHER BEHIND UNDER MORRISON GOVERNMENT
BRENDAN O’CONNOR MP
Today’s unemployment figures from the ABS confirm Australian women are falling behind on every measure of employment under the Morrison Government.
Data shows that women are losing jobs more than men and dropping out of the labour market at far higher rates than men.
Despite this, just yesterday the Minister representing the Minister for Women in the House of Representatives said women’s entrenched disadvantage was ‘so last century’.
The Prime Minister thinks the issue of women giving birth on the side of highway can be solved by upgrading a road.
Is it any wonder that under the Morrison Government women keep falling further behind?
Last week’s decision by the Morrison Government to snap back to its old child care system and end JobKeeper for the sector, where 96% of the workforce is women, will make a bad situation worse.
This is a crisis and the Morrison Government must urgently develop a genuine plan to ensure Australian women don’t continue to go backwards in the aftermath of the COVID-19 crisis.
This plan must include addressing job losses in industries dominated by females, the gender pay gap, and Australian women’s shrinking super balances.
Day after day we see new evidence of the terrible impact COVID-19 is having on Australians women, but in response this Government fails to act.
Australian women cannot be left to snap back to inequality, the Morrison Government must do better.
