HOMEBUILDER: ONE MONTH ON AND STILL NO APPLICATIONS
JASON CLARE MP
One month after the HomeBuilder Scheme was announced by the Morrison Government, and there is still no system in place for a single Australian to make an application to receive the grant.
Households are expected to make large financial commitments ahead of the looming 31 December deadline as uncertainty around the program for tradies and would-be home-buyers and renovators only continues to grow.
Housing construction work is about to fall off a cliff and the Morrison Government has produced a badly targeted, inadequate scheme, with no detail on how to access it.
Apartment approvals took a nosedive in May with a 34.9 per cent drop in approvals, and according to Housing Industry Australia, “HomeBuilder is unlikely to make a significant impact on this part of the market”.
The Morrison Government has also refused to ensure that people who lost their homes in the recent bushfires will be able to get access to the scheme, or address issues identified by stakeholders with purchasing property off the plan.
A recent report from the Grattan Institute backed Labor’s calls for the Morrison Government to invest in social housing which would save tradie jobs and help boost economic recovery.
The Minister for Housing says HomeBuilder is doing exactly what it intended to, but clicking on a link on a website will not save a single job.
This is a Government that is good at making announcements but fails to deliver them.
Labor has repeatedly called on the Morrison Government to ensure that their construction support package included:
1. Construction of more social housing;
2. Repair and maintenance of existing social housing;
3. Construction of more affordable rental accommodation for frontline workers;
4. Expansion of the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme for new builds; and
5. Grants to first home buyers who build their first home.
Thousands of businesses and workers in the construction sector across the country are increasingly anxious that they will be left out and left behind in the first recession in three decades because of the Liberals’ bungling of key support programs like HomeBuilder.
