$44.2 million to support world-leading Australian researchers
THE HON DAN TEHAN MP
The Morrison Government is providing $44.2 million to fund some of Australia’s top academics to continue their world-leading research in the national interest.
Minister for Education Dan Tehan today announced the Australian Laureate Fellows for 2020. The researchers will receive Coalition Government funding to continue their work in areas of national interest, such as:
- Understanding the processes and genes that regulate synthesis and degradation of proteins in wheat and barley plants to benefit Australia’s grain industries.
- Researching longstanding questions about mathematics that will increase Australia’s capacity in number theory and algebraic geometry, which are playing an ever more important role in technology and communications.
- Ensuring Australia’s legal and regulatory systems are fit to deal with the transformative rise of data and its algorithmic analysis to lift economic growth, enhance cyber security, and enhance protections of consumer and individual rights.
- “The Morrison Government has invested $9.6 billion in research already this year, and the Australian Research Council has provided $185 million to fund 221 research projects this year,” Mr Tehan said.
- “Our Government is strategically investing in research in the national interest, with a focus on turning ideas into jobs, productivity gains and economic growth.
- “Our Government is investing in Australian researchers who are doing world-leading work that is delivering a real benefit to the nation.
- “I congratulate the recipients of an Australian Laureate Fellowship, who have been recognised for their innovative work.”
