PALACE LETTERS RELEASE
MARK DREYFUS QC MP
Labor applauds the National Archives Director-General David Fricker for his decision to release the Palace Letters in full.

This decision will enable the Australian people to have a better understanding of the full history of the greatest political and constitutional crisis in Australia’s history.

Labor is a strong supporter of the public’s right to know and freedom of information laws and strongly supports the decision to make public all 211 of the so-called “Palace Letters” between The Queen and her private secretary, and the then-Governor-General.

Today’s announcement is a vindication of Jenny Hocking’s four year campaign to have these letters made public. All Australians owe a debt of gratitude to Professor Hocking for her commitment to telling the full story of the extraordinary and shameful events of 11 November 1975.

Digital copies of the Kerr Palace Letters will be made publicly available on the National Archives’ website from 11.00am on Tuesday 14 July.
