MORRISON GOVERNMENT’S AGED CARE FAILURES
Julie Collins MP
New data commissioned by the Royal Commission into Aged Care underscores the Morrison Government’s abysmal failure to meet the needs of older Australians.
The data reveals 80 per cent of older Australians would like to continue living in their current house to receive support, while 62 per cent would also wish this if they needed care services.
Despite these findings, the Morrison Government continues to fail these older Australians with more than 104,000 currently waiting for the support and care they have been approved for.
Last week’s announcement of additional home care packages represented just another drop in the ocean.
There were no new level four packages for the 21,833 older Australians currently waiting for the highest level of home care.
Disturbing stories of COVID-19 outbreaks in nursing home across the globe will only mean more older Australians choose to receive aged care services at home.
The Royal Commission’s research also showed just 9 per cent of older Australians knew about the Morrison Government’s trouble-plagued gateway to aged care services My Aged Care.
If older Australians don’t even know where to begin receiving support, how many are missing out on care they may need?
Earlier this year it was revealed 110,000 calls for help went unanswered by the My Aged Care call centre over the last three years for those older Australians who did know about it.
Satisfaction with the My Aged Care website was just 57 per cent, falling well short of the Department’s own low target of 65 per cent..
The Morrison Government must do better for older Australians.
