ANGUS TAYLOR’S NEGLECT OF ARENA REACHES NEW HEIGHTS
MARK BUTLER MP
Today, the terms of the current ARENA Board members expired. There has been no decision about the future board and funding for the Agency by embattled Energy Minister Angus Taylor.

Prime Minister Morrison must intervene and immediately commit to re-funding ARENA and appoint new members to the board.

Scott Morrison’s anti-renewables Government has never supported ARENA.

Their neglect undermines Australia’s renewable energy industry, which saw a 50 per cent collapse in investment in 2019, even before the COVID-19 crisis hit.

This comes on top of research that projects 11,000 renewables jobs will be lost in the next two years due to this Government’s refusal to support renewable investment.

Labor established ARENA, while the Liberals have cut funding to ARENA and the CSIRO, and have tried to abolish the Clean Energy Finance Corporation.

Letting ARENA’s resourcing and board lapse is a devastating self-inflicted wound for Australia’s renewable future and exposes the Liberal’s anti-renewables ideology.

Scott Morrison should accept Labor’s call for a bipartisan energy policy to encourage renewable energy that will support the COVID-19 recovery, create tens of thousands of new jobs, stimulate regional economies, and deliver cheaper power for Australian families and businesses.
