FAMILIES BRACING FOR CHILD CARE FEE HIT
AMANDA RISHWORTH MP
Household budgets could soon get even tighter for many Australian families, with child care fees able to soar once again.
From today the Morrison Government is ending the freeze on child care fee increases outside of Victoria.
Before the pandemic, child care fees were skyrocketing and government support was failing to keep up.
The most recent data from the Department of Education (December quarter 2019) shows fees jumped by 4.6 per cent in the preceding year, more than double CPI for the same period (1.8 per cent).
With the Child Care Subsidy support pinned to CPI, families have been carrying an ever-increasing financial burden for the cost of child care.
These are the high fees the Morrison Government snapped families back to at the start of July, and now families are facing further fee hikes.
The government needs to ensure families are not hit with unsustainable fee increases after the losses providers were forced to take during the pandemic.
All the evidence makes clear how important affordable early education and care is not just for parents and children, but for our economic recovery.
The Morrison Government must ensure early learning is affordable, accessible and high quality for every Australian child.
