TREATY ON THE PROHIBITION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS
ANTHONY ALBANESE MP
Labor welcomes the entering into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
The ambition for a world free of nuclear weapons is one that Labor shares.
Australia can and should lead international efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons. A Labor Government would work with our allies and partners to this end and would always act consistently with the US Alliance.
We have committed to signing and ratifying the treaty after taking account the need to ensure an effective verification and enforcement architecture, interaction of the Treaty with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and achieving universal support.
We congratulate the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) and advocates on this further milestone.
