BRANDIS’ ACTIONS AN INSULT TO FAMILY COURT
THE HON MARK DREYFUS QC MP
It is just one day until Chief Justice Diana Bryant’s official farewell, and three working days until her statutory retirement.
The Attorney-General – that is, the man in charge of our court system – has not announced her replacement. This is mystifying.
The Family Court system is in crisis, due to a lack of resources and attention from Senator Brandis. Now he is inflicting the ultimate insult by apparently leaving the Court hanging without a leader, when Chief Justice Bryant retires next week.
Families in the court system are already suffering greatly due to long delays. Now Senator Brandis is injecting further uncertainty into the system.
Just what is he playing at?
If reports today that Senator Brandis is considering abolishing the Family Court are true, this is deeply troubling and shocking. Not least, because he would be doing the bidding of One Nation leader Pauline Hanson.
If Senator Brandis is planning major changes to the Family Court he should front up and explain them. He cannot be allowed to undermine the system by neglect.
