TURNBULL MUST DROP HIS UNFAIR CUT TO 100,000 CARERS

Labor calls on the Turnbull Government to drop its unfair plan to axe the Energy Supplement to 1.7 million Australians including around 100,000 new carers.

 

If Malcolm Turnbull and Christian Porter had their way these carers would suffer a cut of $14.10 per fortnight or $365 a year.

Axing the Energy Supplement was first proposed by Mr Turnbull in the 2016 Budget, but he still hasn’t been able to pass this cut through the Senate.

It’s time that Mr Turnbull dropped this unfair cut to carers once and for all.

Labor also calls on the Turnbull Government to give a permanent commitment to improve the lives of young carers.

 

We welcome the small projects announced earlier this week by the Minister for Social Services, Christian Porter but the Government needs to follow through with more permanent funding.

What young carers really need is an on-going commitment and programs that all young carers know will be available when they are able to seek employment or undertake further study.

Young carers should be applauded for the work they do and provided with permanent support to transition to employment when circumstances allow.

 

The last thing that Mr Turnbull should be doing is axing the Energy Supplement to 100,000 carers.

 

It’s time to take this cut to the Energy Supplement out of the Parliament and out of the Budget, for good.
